Weather & Hazards — METAR, Weather Radar, CB

Topic drill: read a METAR under pressure, interpret the weather radar on a real navigation display, and pick the correct phraseology when you have to deviate around a CB cell.

Aviation weather literacy is a Level 4+ prerequisite. This drill mixes a complex METAR read, a real cockpit weather-radar picture, and a tactical deviation request — exactly the kind of weather event that drives an unscheduled radio exchange in flight.

// WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Decode this METAR
    A METAR for your destination (LTBA Istanbul) just printed on the ACARS.
  • Read the weather radar
    Your navigation display in cruise, weather radar on, range 80 NM (the ring is 40 NM). Track 282, ground speed 404 kt, wind 234° at 50 kt, next waypoint GOVIT at 66.6 NM. Study the picture, then answer.
  • Deviation around a CB cell
    Ten minutes later the line of cells has spread across your track, tops to FL410, 35 NM ahead. You decide to deviate left of track by 25 NM to clear the cell.
  • Describe the picture
    Describe the cloud in the picture: its type and how you recognise it, what it tells you about the weather, the hazards it brings to an aircraft, and what you would do as the pilot if it were on your route. Press Record and speak for about one minute. You can listen back and record again before you submit.
// BRIEFING
You are en-route over central Anatolia at FL370 (call-sign Marigold one two three). Convective activity is building on your planned track. The exam mixes reading aviation weather products with the radiotelephony needed to deviate.
