Taxi & Ground Operations — Holding Positions & Read-backs

Topic drill: a real runway holding position (sign and marking), a taxi clearance with a hold-short instruction, and the read-back. Ground operations cause more incursions per hour than any other phase of flight.

Runway incursions start on the taxiway. This drill shows you a real runway holding position — the red mandatory-instruction sign, the yellow location sign and the marking across the taxiway — and then walks you through the kind of taxi clearance you'll hear at a busy commercial field.

// WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Read the holding position
    You are taxiing on taxiway Delta and reach the position in the photo. Study the signs and the marking, then answer the three questions below.
  • Read back the taxi clearance
    Listen, then pick the correct read-back.
  • Describe the picture
    Describe the taxiway in the picture: the lights and markings you can see, the visibility and the time of day, and how you would taxi safely here. Explain where a runway incursion could happen and how you would avoid it. Press Record and speak for about one minute. You can listen back and record again before you submit.
// BRIEFING
You are taxiing a Boeing 737 (call-sign Redstone six one two) from stand A3 to runway 34R for departure at an aerodrome with two parallel runways, 34L/16R and 34R/16L. The photo in the visual section shows the runway holding position on taxiway Delta. Wind 320° at 18 kt gusting 27.
