ICAO 4-5 Operational — IFR Radiotelephony

For working pilots and ATPL students aiming to consolidate Level 4 or push for Level 5. Mixes a busy-airport ATIS, an approach clearance under time pressure and a wind-shear go-around.

A 22-minute, realistic practice exam built around a busy approach environment. You'll listen to a complex ATIS, parse an ATC instruction with several restrictions and pick the correct response under time pressure.

// WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • ATIS — LTFM Information Kilo
    Istanbul Airport ATIS, evening operations. Replay if you need to.
  • Approach instruction — read-back
    Approach control just gave you an instruction. Listen, then choose the correct read-back.
  • Going around
    Short final runway 34R. You're at 600 ft above the ground when severe wind-shear shakes the aircraft and the warning system calls 'WIND-SHEAR, WIND-SHEAR'. The captain disconnects the autopilot and pushes the thrust levers forward. You are pilot monitoring.
  • Describe the picture
    Describe the flight deck: what the displays and the thrust levers show, which phase of flight this is, what the pilot flying is doing with his hand, and what the pilot monitoring should be checking right now. Press Record and speak for about one minute. You can listen back and record again before you submit.
// BRIEFING
You are first officer on Skyhaven 127 heavy (call-sign Skyhaven one two seven heavy), a Boeing 777 inbound to Istanbul (LTFM). The captain handles the aircraft; you handle the radio. Listen for restrictions on speed and level, and for the runway change near the bottom of the descent.
