ICAO 3-4 Foundations — Basic Radiotelephony

If you're brand-new to aviation English or pushing for the international minimum (Level 4), start here. ATIS, a METAR, and the read-back of a line-up instruction.

This 18-minute practice exam targets the Pre-Operational → Operational band. You'll listen to a clear-weather ATIS, decode a simple METAR, and answer routine clearance questions exactly as you'd hear them at a major aerodrome.

// WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • ATIS — Information Bravo
    Listen to the full ATIS broadcast, then answer the three questions below.
  • Decode this METAR
    Read the METAR and answer the questions that follow.
  • Correct read-back
    The tower has just transmitted to you. Pick the read-back that follows ICAO standard phraseology.
  • Describe the picture
    Describe what you can see: the type of aircraft and its configuration, the phase of flight, the time of day and the weather, and what the crew will be doing at this moment. Then say what happens next. Press Record and speak for about one minute. You can listen back and record again before you submit.
// BRIEFING
You are the pilot handling the radio on a two-crew light business jet (call-sign D-EFGH, spoken Delta-Echo-Foxtrot-Golf-Hotel) at London Heathrow, a Class D control zone. Listen carefully — you may replay each radio clip. Use ICAO standard phraseology when judging correct read-backs.
